What is fatty liver ?

Fatty liver, or steatosis, is a condition where excessive fat accumulates in liver cells, impairing its function. There are two types: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD). Symptoms often include fatigue, weight loss, and abdominal discomfort. If untreated, it can progress to serious complications like cirrhosis or liver cancer. Therefore, lifestyle modifications, like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and alcohol moderation, are crucial for management and prevention.

Diabetes contributes to fat accumulation in the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This in turn exacerbates insulin resistance, making diabetes management more challenging. Recent studies indicate that around 70% of type 2 diabetics may have undiagnosed NAFLD. This dangerous synergy increases the risk of severe health outcomes, including liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, managing both conditions concurrently is crucial to mitigate associated health risks and improve patient outcomes.

What does Ayurveda say about fatty liver and diabetes?

Ayurveda sees fatty liver in diabetes as a result of imbalance in “Kapha” and “Pitta” doshas. High “Ama” or toxins due to an unhealthy diet and lifestyle leads to fat accumulation, disturbing liver function. Diabetes (Madhumeha) worsens this by altering metabolism. Ayurvedic approaches focus on detoxifying the liver, improving metabolism, and reducing fat accumulation. Diet control, regular exercise, herbs like Amla, Turmeric, Kutki are recommended. Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma may also be beneficial. While Ayurveda can supplement conventional treatment, it’s important to consult with healthcare professionals to manage both conditions effectively.

Ayurvedic Herbs:

Amla (Indian Gooseberry):

Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa):
